I’m Vikramadhitya M, one of the 2026 Edge Impulse Campus Ambassadors. This July, I provided mentoring at the AI Hardware Buildathon, a community-driven event held in Bengaluru on July 19th 2026. Here is my recap of the experience.

Close to 100 people attended the Buildathon, ranging from school students to corporate professionals dusting off their soldering skills after years away from hardware. This was one of the first events of its kind in India, and the energy in the room matched that milestone.
A First-of-Its-Kind Community Gathering
What made this buildathon special wasn’t just the hardware. It was the mix of people in the room. School students sat shoulder to shoulder with working professionals who hadn’t touched a microcontroller in years and were clearly excited to get back into it. Everyone came ready to learn, which gave the whole event a strong community feel rather than a competitive one. Edge Impulse and Arduino joined as key collaborators, and every participant received an Arduino UNO Q, making it the true star of the day.

Mentoring on the Ground
I showed up repping my Edge Impulse t-shirt, part of a mentor squad that included Salman Faris (Edge Impulse Expert Network) and several others. Our job was equal parts technical support and encouragement helping teams onboard the Arduino UNO Q with Arduino App Lab, solving connection issues, and getting them to the point where they could actually start building.
As expected for a first-of-its-kind event, getting the UNO Q set up smoothly was the biggest challenge teams faced. Driver quirks and connectivity snags required patience, but that’s exactly what mentors were there for. By the time the day was in full swing, most teams had cleared that hurdle and were heads-down building their projects.

Where Edge Impulse Fit In
We spent a good part of the day introducing teams to the Edge Impulse platform, how it integrates with the Arduino UNO Q, and why it’s becoming a go-to tool for embedded machine learning. We walked people through examples in the Arduino App Lab and made the case for running models at the edge instead of relying entirely on the cloud.
Edge Impulse was a completely new concept for almost everyone in the room. By the end of the day, no team had fully deployed a model on the platform, and most stuck to cloud-based approaches. That was expected for a first attempt. What mattered more was that the seed was planted. Many participants left knowing exactly where to go when they’re ready to build real edge AI solutions.
Great Projects Across the Board
Despite the onboarding challenges, the projects that came out of the day were genuinely impressive. Teams built a wide range of applications, from cloud-connected systems to fully on-device solutions.
Standout projects included a home workout counter that analyzed a video stream to count reps and included a voice command assistant, a chess board monitor that tracked moves entirely on the edge, a fruit quality monitor that assessed freshness and quality, and an HVAC system that detected occupancy and adjusted temperature based on the number and location of people in a room.
These projects offered a clear glimpse of what’s possible once teams get comfortable with the hardware and tools.
Conclusion
The AI Hardware Buildathon wasn’t just an event — it felt like the opening chapter of something bigger. A room full of people, many of them brand new to embedded hardware, spent a full day wrestling with boards, sensors, and code, and left more curious than when they arrived. Edge Impulse may not have made it into every final build this time, but the conversations we had planted the right questions.
